Grace Madison was born in Brooklyn, New York. She married in 1945. In 1956, she, her husband and three children moved to Manhattan Beach, California. Grace cared for their three children, plus other children whom she provided "day care" for while her husband worked outside the home. Eventually, with an empty nest and her husband's health deteriorating, they moved to Banning, California.
Grace's husband died a few years ago and she moved again. This time, to a retirement community in Long Beach, California to be near her children.
Grace recalls stories her husband often told about his experiences, and those of family members, in the service. He spoke about how well they were treated by The Salvation Army. Young Salvation Army members would write letters for the wounded, prepare hot meals for weary soldiers and provide a never-ending supply coffee and doughnuts, all at no charge.
Although they contributed to their church and other organizations, The Salvation Army has always been their favorite.
Grace set up a charitable gift annuity to help The Salvation Army meet the needs of numerous low-income and homeless men, women and, especially children.
"I set up the charitable gift annuity because I wanted the flexibility to do what I wanted with the money while I'm alive. I love helping children and I know I'm helping The Salvation Army help youngsters get a good start in life. I also admire The Salvation Army's strong Christian foundation," says Grace.
Through Grace's charitable gift annuity, the memories of her husband will live on in the lives of the men, women and children whose lives are touched by their generosity.
